Kitchen Countertop Materials And Design Style Pairings

With so many different types of kitchen countertops available, choosing one that meets your tastes and design style can seem a bit overwhelming. However, if you know the style of kitchen you wish to achieve, you can drastically narrow your list of countertop possibilities. If you are redesigning or planning a new kitchen, here are a few popular style and countertop pairings.

Old World Or Tuscany Style

The Mediterranean style is known for its unique blend of fun colors and sophisticated style. This juxtaposition creates a warm and welcoming kitchen with a touch of historic class. To find a material that matches this style, look for a marble or quartz kitchen countertop with warm colors such as terra cotta. Order it with an angled edge for a bit of added style and more horizontal lines. Tiling is another excellent idea for this style, but remember that this material will require a bit more attention in terms of cleaning because of the grout lines.

Country-Style Kitchens

Country style has a down-home, comfortable feeling that can follow two distinct types of 'country.' French inspired country homes have a romantic and more formal appearance that plays on a combination of darks and lights. Since you'll likely have porcelain or ceramic tile on the floor, look for a coordinating solid surface or Corian kitchen countertop. This should be in a nice black, or near black color if you have light colored cabinets. If you have dark cabinets, which is closer to the traditional French-country style, look for materials that are a white or near white in color.

A rustic country style needs materials that can mimic that rough, unrefined look this design style is known for. Solid wood is excellent for topping off natural wood cabinets. However, you can enjoy the durability with quartz, granite, solid-surface kitchen countertop or even dark marble. For a bit of added luxury, have a drain tray for dishes routed right into the top as well as inlayed cutting boards.

Modern Or Contemporary Style

If you love bold, solid colors and sharp, definite lines, you'll want a kitchen countertop that compliments a modern design. Granite countertops are the top choice for modern kitchens because of their sleek look and enormous range of colors, but are also one of the most expensive. Laminate countertops are an economical way to achieve a similar look, but without the steep price tag. Look for solid, bold colors that match your color scheme. If using marble, granite, or faux marble countertops, consider finishes that appear solid in color from a distance. Bottom line, you'll want a sharp square edge to compliment the horizontal and vertical lines indicative of this design.

Selecting a kitchen countertop is not a choice to be taken lightly. Not only should you enjoy the ambiance of your kitchen, this is the one room that can make a big impact on the resale value of your home. For the most seamless design results, begin with a style in mind and then search for countertop materials that are recommended for that particular style.
